YOU KNOW NOTHING OF
JAVERTVALVERT!I am the vow and the vow is not mocked!
I was born inside a veil!
There is nothing on earth that we share, it is either Valjean or Valvert!
#clearly this is a hint that half life 3 will take place in nineteenth-century france
It is either Javjean or Valvert, aha. #tearsofhappiness #LetHimAnswerToValvert
“Valvert” sounds like a name from a porn-parody. © Rene

I can haz ‘Les Mis 2012, The Slashy Remake’!! ;D
Since they’re using the ship name I’m disappointed that there’s not a picture of Valjean and Javert kissing (or at least looking at each other USTily)

You’ll spend your entire life trying to catch me, but you won’t be able to until the very end.
And when that day comes, you’ll have to let me go…
And then you’ll go jump off a bridge. Fuck you.
A question I often ask people when they say they’re a fan of Roger Allam is ‘have you heard him sing?’ In the majority of cases, ‘yes’, they say, they have heard him in Cabin Pressure and he’s very good.
That’s true enough. But what you have in Cabin Pressure is Roger Allam singing in character as a man who is merely a ‘very good singer’. In reality, he’s so much better than that, so here’s him actually singing Stars from Les Miserables (he was the original Javert) and it’s a glorious thing to hear.
For a complete change of tone from this song, here’s a link to a recording of him singing I Am What I Am from La Cage Aux Folles, a wonderful example of a song being both brilliantly sung and brilliantly acted.
Today’s track is Confrontation from Les Miserables with Roger Allam as Javert and Colm Wilkinson as Valjean. Once again, this song is beautifully acted and sang by Allam; in my opinion, Wilkinson rather over-acts here (particularly when his accent mysteriously changes) but I have heard him sing it better in performance.
Since I appear to be amassing a collection of these things, here are some more song links:
- Stars, Les Miserables
- I Am What I Am, La Cage Aux Folles
- You’re Nothing Without Me, City of Angels
- The Tennis Song, City of Angels
Posting this here for Penillo who has stated a fondness for it :-P The 25th Anniversary performance of One Day More. It makes me a little sad, though, because Allam’s all on his lonesome and doesn’t get as big a cheer as the others (probably because he’s playing ‘the villain’- pfft, Javert is nothing of the sort! Either that or people just didn’t recognise him, which is even worse…)
Here’s a more updated updated list of the things I have on here with Allam singing:
- One Day More: Les Miserables
- Confrontation: Les Miserables
- Stars, Les Miserables
- I Am What I Am, La Cage Aux Folles
- You’re Nothing Without Me, City of Angels
- The Tennis Song, City of Angels

MUST BE JAVERT HE’S FOUND MY TUMBLR AT LAST
He only just started following? Slow progress, Javert, you’ll never catch him at this rate.
Javert’s sidekicks are the best things about the 1998 movie.
Javert has sidekicks?! I need to see this film!
Ahh!! I can’t wait!!!!!
Ok, I know this film is coming out on the 14th December, which for everyone else is going to be ‘Hobbit day,’ but I’m far more excited about this one! Les Mis is one of my favourite things ever and though I’m slightly apprehensive about the cast / the shift from stage to screen I can’t wait to see how they do. And look, Javert has a horse. And minions!
Doing days one, two and three of the Les Mis Meme at once because I’m away tomorrow and on Wednesday.
Day 1: Favourite Valjean and why?
John Owen Jones, my first Valjean (and the youngest ever, first cast in the role at just 26). With the first note that came out of his mouth, I was completely hooked. His voice is wonderfully pure and he really made me believe every word he was saying; though I’ve seen and heard more than ten different Valjeans since him, he remains my favourite. Here, have a link to him performing Bring Him Home.

Day 2: Favourite Javert and why?
Roger Allam. Oh God, Roger Allam. I mean, I really do love Philip Quast (who, intriguingly, I watched Roger Allam murder in the 1995 RSC production of Macbeth… I was only five at the time, but still) and I also love the other Javert’s I’ve seen in London (even if the most recent one did somehow manage to forget the words to One Day More) but for me it will always be Allam. His voice never fails to make me shiver with pleasure (too much info?); there’s a quality to it that I can’t even begin to define and he acts every word. I can (and, in fact, do) listen to him again and again (if you care to join in this particular crusade, here’s a little masterpost of his singing that I put together earlier).
Javert’s certainly my favourite character in Les Miserables, and Allam was the first man to portray his complexities in musical form. When he got the role he was an actor with the RSC and had never appeared in a musical before; the songs were unfinished, the production far too long and no one had the faintest idea how anyone was going to react. I admire him for establishing the role so brilliantly, and also for having the courage to leave as early as he did to pursue other acting roles despite the steady wage and security that the production was providing him with (well, I admire him for other reasons as well… have you ever looked at my blog? I’m completely besotted with the man!)
Here’s a picture of him out-fabulousing Colm Wilkinson (your hair, sir).

Day 3: Favourite Fantine and why?
I’m not sure I really have one! All the Fantines I’ve seen have been outstanding and I’m not sure I could pick one (this is, I will admit, partly because it’s very rare that I actually go into a performance of Les Mis knowing who’s playing who). I’ve been to see the show in London nine times and I’ve only once bought a programme. I’m a bad fan.
